For those who want to achieve the best possible audio quality with current lossy compression technologies.

Those who find that using iTunes for ripping audio is just not good enough.

I've been using LAME to compress my MP3s for a long time but sometimes, particularly with Pop music or something where quality is not very relevant, I find it easier to just rip it on iTunes. Nevertheless, I do use high bitrate and Variable Bitrate encoding, usually 224Kbps VBR.
